Living Near the GO Train in Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga and Milton: A Station-by-Station Guide

For many people moving to our area, the first question isn’t about square footage. Instead, it’s about the commute. How long will it take to get downtown? Can I skip the QEW entirely? For thousands of households in Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga and Milton, the answer is the GO train.
Living close to a GO station can change your daily routine. It can also widen your job options and add long-term value to your home. Still, every station offers a different experience, and so does every neighbourhood around it. Here is our station-by-station guide, with the neighbourhoods we’d look at near each stop.
Two Lines, Two Very Different Commutes
Two GO train lines serve our area. However, the difference between them matters more than most buyers realize.
The Lakeshore West line runs along the lake through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington. It’s the region’s workhorse. Trains run in both directions all day, seven days a week, between Union Station and Aldershot GO. You can catch a Saturday game downtown or come home at 9 p.m. on a Tuesday. You can also reverse-commute to a job in Burlington.
Meanwhile, Metrolinx plans to add even more trains. Its Lakeshore West GO Expansion aims for trains every 15 minutes or better between Toronto and Burlington. That goal is also one reason buyers keep competing for homes near these stations.
The Milton line runs from Milton through Mississauga and into Toronto. It’s one of the busiest lines on the GO network. However, trains run mainly at rush hour, toward Union in the morning and back in the evening. All-day, two-way service on this line remains a long-term goal with no firm date.
Do you work a standard weekday schedule downtown? Then the Milton line can be a great commute. If your hours vary, however, check the GO Transit schedules for your station before you buy.
Lakeshore West Stations in Mississauga
Port Credit GO
Port Credit GO puts you steps from one of the most walkable villages in the region. You can stroll to Lakeshore Road’s restaurants, the marina and the waterfront trail. Homes also range from new condos to older detached houses in nearby Mineola.
In addition, the Hazel McCallion Line LRT on Hurontario Street is designed to connect here. That adds a north-south transit link to an already well-connected area. As a result, Port Credit suits first-time buyers and downsizers who want to drive less.
Clarkson GO
Clarkson GO is one of the larger stations on the line. Commuters from Clarkson Village and Lorne Park use it every day. Lorne Park, for example, offers mature trees, larger lots and established family streets. Closer to the station, however, you’ll find newer townhomes and condos.
Overall, Clarkson feels quieter and more residential than Port Credit. Rattray Marsh and the waterfront also sit nearby for weekend walks.
Lakeshore West Stations in Oakville
Oakville GO
Oakville GO sits near Trafalgar Road and Cross Avenue. It’s the busiest station in town and the heart of Midtown Oakville. In fact, the town expects this area to grow a lot in the years ahead.
As a result, more condos and mixed-use buildings are coming to the area. Buyers who want to walk to the train will like that. Downtown Oakville and Kerr Village are also just a few minutes away. Both local and express trains stop here as well.
Want a detached home instead? Look at older neighbourhoods south of the QEW, including parts of Old Oakville. From there, the platform is a short drive or bike ride away.
Bronte GO
Bronte GO sits on Bronte Road near Wyecroft Road. It serves west Oakville, including Bronte, West Oak Trails and Glen Abbey. Families often choose this area because of Glen Abbey’s parks, trails and schools. They still get a direct rail link to Toronto.
Bronte Village and the harbour are close by as well. You can commute all week and spend your weekends by the lake. Exploring this part of Oakville? Our guide to West GTA school districts makes a useful companion read.
Lakeshore West Stations in Burlington
Appleby GO
Appleby GO sits just south of Fairview Street on Appleby Line. It serves east Burlington neighbourhoods like Longmoor, Pinedale and Shoreacres. These areas offer the classic Burlington family lifestyle. Expect established streets, easy lake access and a slower pace than downtown.
For this reason, Appleby works well for buyers who want a detached home near the station. Most homes here are a short drive or bike ride away.
Burlington GO
Burlington GO, at Fairview Street and Brant Street, is the city’s main station. The city plans more housing and mixed-use buildings around it. In addition, nearby neighbourhoods like Freeman offer plenty of choice. You’ll find newer condos near the station and older bungalows a little further out.
Downtown Burlington, Spencer Smith Park and the waterfront are also a short trip away.
Aldershot GO
Aldershot GO sits at Burlington’s western edge, close to Royal Botanical Gardens and the Hamilton border. The Aldershot neighbourhood offers larger lots, mature trees and a quiet residential feel. At the same time, builders have added newer townhomes and condos right by the station.
All-day Lakeshore West service ends here. As a result, Aldershot is handy for commuters heading east to Toronto or west to Hamilton.
Milton Line Stations in Mississauga and Milton
Milton GO
The line begins and ends at Milton GO. This station is the starting point for commuters from one of Ontario’s fastest-growing towns. Homes near the station put you close to Old Milton and the shops on Main Street. Newer neighbourhoods like Hawthorne Village and Willmott are also a short drive away.
Since trains start here, Milton riders usually get the best shot at a morning seat.
Lisgar, Meadowvale and Streetsville GO
These three stations serve some of Mississauga’s most family-focused neighbourhoods. Buyers in Lisgar and Churchill Meadows use Lisgar GO. In general, newer detached homes and townhouses fill these areas.
Similarly, Meadowvale GO serves the established Meadowvale community, with plenty of parks and trails. Streetsville GO sits a short walk from the historic Village of Streetsville. Its Queen Street strip is one of the most charming main streets in the city.
Erindale, Cooksville and Dixie GO
Closer to Toronto, Erindale GO serves central Mississauga. It’s especially handy for anyone who studies or works at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
Cooksville GO sits near Hurontario Street. The city plans it as a link to the Hazel McCallion Line LRT, which makes it one of Mississauga’s best-placed stations. Finally, Dixie GO serves established neighbourhoods in east Mississauga. It also offers one of the shortest Milton line rides into Toronto.
What to Know Before You Buy Near a GO Station
Living near the train comes with a few trade-offs. Think them through before you make an offer.
Walk versus drive. Parking lots at busy stations like Oakville, Clarkson and Burlington can fill early on weekdays. For that reason, you’ll save time if you can walk, bike or take a short bus ride. Oakville Transit, Burlington Transit, MiWay and Milton Transit all connect to their local stations.
Noise and activity. Homes that back onto the tracks give you the shortest walk. They also bring the most train noise. So visit at rush hour, not just on a quiet Sunday, to get a true feel for it.
Growth around stations. Cities plan more housing and mixed-use buildings around many GO stations. That can bring new shops, services and value. It can also bring construction in the short term.
Service changes. GO schedules shift from time to time. Track work can also close parts of the line on some weekends. Because of this, check the current schedule for your station and hours as part of your research.
