Fun Facts about Mississauga 

One of Canada’s biggest cities, Mississauga is a wonderfully diverse place to live, with quality housing options, local natural settings, exceptional community amenities, and a thriving job market. You’ll find an active cultural life with galleries and theatres, more than 480 parks, unique shopping districts, and two marinas along the shores of Lake Ontario. Voted the safest city in Canada 7 years in a row, Mississauga is an incredible place to call home. 

  1. Hazel McCallion was the world’s oldest mayor – she served for 36 years until retiring at the age of 93! 
  2. One of Canada’s largest cities, Mississauga is bigger than Detroit, Boston, Washington, and Vancouver.
  3. Mississauga’s sister city is Kariya, Japan. We have the beautiful Kariya park covered in traditional cherry blossom trees, and Kariya is home to Mississauga Park. 
  4. The colonel lived in Mississauga and could be found frequently at the KFC on Tomken Rd. 
  5. Many TV shows and movies were filmed in Mississauga, including Hannibal, Lost Girl and Nikita.

Living In Mississauga  

Along the shores of Lake Ontario, Mississauga has an abundance of stunning lake views, trails, and parks to get out and enjoy nature. Visit Port Credit for breathtaking views of the lake, walking trails, unique retail shops, and some of the city’s best restaurants. 

Rattray Marsh is a wetland and hidden natural gem within the city. There is an extensive boardwalk and elevated viewing platforms to help you see herons, wood warblers, turtles, or frogs.  Or visit one of the 480 parks in the area, such as Jack Darling Memorial Park on the shores of Lake Ontario. The Park is home to one of Mississauga’s best beaches, tennis courts, a splash pad, playgrounds, picnic sites, and a huge dog run. You can also explore one of the 42 community facilities, including outdoor pools, community centres, sports parks, and golf courses. 

If you are looking for outdoor fun, stop by Celebration Square at City Hall. You’ll find regular performances, a wide variety of food trucks, and the Lions Farmers Market in the summer. 

Mississauga has an abundance of shopping centres and districts and is home to one of Canada’s largest malls, Square One, with over 330 shops. You can easily find everything you need within the city! 

History buffs can check out the Bradley Museum, with three historical buildings dating back to 1820 or visit Benares Historic House, dating back to 1853. While, artists will enjoy Sculpture Court or Lakeview Village Complex, with murals by emerging artists, and the Art Gallery of Mississauga,

Working in Mississauga 

Living in Mississauga means easy access to one of the country’s hottest job markets. There are plenty of job opportunities with the country’s largest airport, over 60 Fortune 500 company head offices (including Walmart and TJX), and a thriving small business sector.  

Its proximity to Toronto also means the city is perfect for those who work downtown but prefer living in a suburban area. 

Education in Mississauga 

Two school boards serve Mississauga – The Peel Board of Education and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic Board, with over 250 elementary and secondary schools in the region, including French Immersion, Catholic, and Alternative education. 

The city is also home to over 30 private schools and a satellite campus of the University of Toronto. There are 10 universities and 11 technical colleges within commuting distance for college-aged kids.

Mississauga Neighbourhoods 

North Mississauga 

Lisgar is a newer area, developed in the 1990s and 2000s, popular with families looking for modern homes or those commuting to Toronto, as it has its own GO train line to the city and is close to all major highways. 

Meadowvale is quiet and affordable compared to many areas of Mississauga, with a large proportion of townhomes and semi-detached houses. In the South end, there are also many single-family homes close to some of the city’s best schools. 

Meadowvale Village is a small, upper-class community with excellent French-language schools and an exciting mix of newer homes built with historic character in mind. 

Churchill Meadows is a newer area perfect for those looking for a modern home in a well-planned community. 

Central Erin Mills is the perfect suburban neighbourhood with large brick homes, various parks, walking paths, and excellent schools. 

Streetsville is known as ‘The Village in The City’ and includes historic areas, new suburban developments, and vibrant downtown, full of unique restaurants, cafes, and shops. 

East Credit is a relatively young neighbourhood with a mix of townhomes, semi-detached and detached homes, known for the Heartland Town Centre and BraeBen Golf Course. 

Hurontario is a perfect family community, centrally located, and close to all the best amenities Mississauga offers. 

South Mississauga 

Erin Mills was developed in the 70s and 80s, so there is a wide range of housing styles. You’ll also find an extensive park and pathway system with miles of trails for jogging, hiking and bike riding. 

Erindale is an older community that offers a mix of affordable semi-detached homes, stunning detached homes, and luxury homes close to the Credit River. 

Cooksville is one of the cities most populated areas with a mix of neighbourhoods. You’ll find a combination of an urban feel with apartments and condos and more family-oriented communities for growing families. 

Sheridan is a beautiful community with a range of price points, including exclusive upper-class subdivisions. The area has mature trees, quiet streets, and tremendous curb appeal. 

Mississauga City Center is a modern downtown surrounding Square One, which appeals to those looking for a modern condo within walking distance to many amenities. 

Mississauga Valleys is one of the area’s original suburban developments, offering a diverse choice of housing styles. 

Rathwood is a quaint, family-oriented community with excellent schools and large homes close to Toronto. 

Applewood is a 1970s style suburban community with tree-lined streets, perfect for growing families. 

Clarkson offers a more urban feel than many areas of Mississauga with its proximity to Toronto and a thriving downtown area. 

Lorne Park is a quiet, elegant area with mature trees and character homes, known in the late 1800s as the “Hamptons” for Toronto’s upper class. 

Port Credit is the oldest village in the city. With a history of over 300 years, distinct character, a small-town feel, the neighbourhood differs from many suburban areas throughout the city. 

Mineola is one of the city’s most exclusive areas. It has a quiet, country feel with mature trees and large lots perfect for building custom homes.

Lakeview is a growing area for those who want to be close to the lake and downtown Toronto, with many post-war cottage-style homes on generous-sized lots.
